The 2018 BMW 3 Series has been spied in the later stages of pre-production testing, and looking at the forms hidden beneath its zebra-stripe disguise gives a reasonable impression of what we can expect.
Codenamed G20, the 2018 BMW 3 Series is expect to be represent an aesthetic evolution rather than revolution, in the same way the design team behind the latest BMW 5 Series played it reasonably safe.
Although not clear from these shots, later images seen by Carbuyer indicate the 2018 3 Series will feature similar gill-like vents behind the front wheels as the 5 Series. These will smooth the car’s progress as it travels through the air, and should also help distinguish it from the model it replaces.
Low weight and high technology look set to be the buzzwords for the new 3 Series: reports estimate the 2018 executive saloon will be up to 100kg lighter than the car it replaces, thanks to extensive use of carbon-fibre. BMW has invested heavily in this strong, light material for its i8 supercar and the large 7 Series executive saloon; using carbon-fibre tends to reduce weight, improve efficiency and increased levels of strength and stiffness – although it’s also known to add expense.
